A study of 10.000 pregnant women in Kenya to fight against “The Rhesus Disease”
Rhesus disease is a preventable condition, but in most developing countries no consolidated efforts are made to precent Rhesus disease among all women. Rhesus disease is a condition where a Rh-negative mother is exposed to blood that is Rh-positive, most often through pregnancy with a Rh-positive child, her immune system mistakes this as an invader and reacts accordingly. As the sensitizing takes time, the first child is normally unharmed. However, in following pregnancies the condition can lead perinatal death and disability.
Furthermore, we are excited to announce that we have been invited to join a research initiative in partnership with Eldon Biologicals. This collaborative effort involves conducting a study in Kenya, where we aim to test the blood types of 10.000 pregnant women with the EldonCard to find the RhD Neg women and by use of the MPHB APP connect them to the health system so they will get the needed treatment. This study holds great importance as it enables us to identify pregnant women and support their prophylactic treatment. By leveraging this valuable data, we can ensure that expectant mothers receive targeted care and treatment tailored to their unique needs, thereby promoting the well-being of both mother and child. It is also an opportunity to generate new volunteer blood donors, addressing the critical donor shortage that exists in most African countries, thereby enabling better responses to many clinical challenges, including women experiencing complications when giving birth.
